Augusto Relvas, aged 96, personifies the serenity and balance found in flowers and plants, central elements of the tranquility that have always guided his life. Living in a home, but with his heart still in his homeland Portalegre, Senhor Augusto has a special affection for sharing the stories he has accumulated over the years. These narratives, now compiled in a book of memories full of popular quatrains and proverbs, are his legacy for new generations.

“Peace must always prevail; otherwise, it’s time for a change”, teaches us Augusto, whose work was enriched by his wife’s dedication to preserving her writings, to bringing her memories to life.

His professional career was marked by experience in cooking oil factories both in Portugal and in Africa, even registering patents. However, his artistic inclination was never overshadowed, culminating in the release of his first literary work at the age of 96.

Augusto compares life to a mountain that must be climbed with patience and persistence, not through impulsive leaps, but through progressive steps until reaching the summit. “Life is a constant ascent.”

The launch of the book brought together friends and family at Casa do Povo de Alagoa, a place of deep family and personal memories, including his

late wife. Currently, Augusto lives in another institution, but he insisted that the presentation of his work took place in this significant location.

Augusto is celebrated as a living example of active and healthy aging, whose life story and capabilities are inspiring. His family’s account of the surprises and discoveries made through reading the book highlights the pride and admiration they feel for him.

At 96 years old, Augusto Relvas remains determined to continue his journey of writing and sharing stories. He is already preparing a second book about his childhood and a novel based on plays he wrote for amateur theater, which have not yet been performed on stage. “I feel happy and fulfilled”, says Augusto, modestly describing himself as more of a storyteller than a writer.
