O Returning from mandatory military service has been on the table in recent days. Several countries have addressed the issue – such as Germany, or even Denmark, which extends compulsory service to women – and Portugal also seems to be aware of this possibility.
At least this is what the Chief of Staff of the Navy, Admiral Gouveia e Melo, made us believe, who in an interview with Radio Renascença, recalls that “today there are no great distances and we can quickly be involved in a European conflict”.
Gouveia e Melo begins by stating that “there are three possible strategies: that of cooperation, that of deterrence and that of confrontation”, remembering, however, that “we, Western Europe, are no longer able to implement the strategy of cooperation with the Russian Federation governed by Putin.”
Having said that, he recalls that Russia has “very professionalized and high-cost forces”, unlike Europe where “few people have the capacity to, in the event of an emergency, be able to react quickly and mobilize quickly to defend the country”.
Thus, he defends the main face of the vaccination campaign against Covid-19 in Portugal, “Without a regular and periodic training system, such as mandatory military service or another variant, the human component available to fight is greatly reduced.”
“If the opponent realizes that we have great human fragility, that we are unable to recruit, that we are unable to generate forces in time for a certain action, he may be led to think that he can be successful if he moves towards direct confrontation and that alone it is very dangerous”, he emphasizes, noting that the objective will always be to “dissuade an opponent from entering into conflict with us” and avoid the confrontation phase.
“Recruitment, compulsory military service, not in previous ways, but in more modern and intelligent ways, It can also serve as an important deterrent to the dangers we all now face in Europe.”he concludes.
