Employees from the Viana do Castelo City Council planted two hundred forest species in Monte de Santa Luzia, to celebrate the International Day of Forests, marked on March 21st.
The celebrations of this day, which this year had as their theme ”Forests and Innovation: New solutions for a better world”, began with the planting of 200 forest species by employees from different departments of the Municipality in an area of around 5,000 mtwo on the most iconic hill in Viana do Castelo.
The action was organized by the Forestry Office, of the Environment and Climate Change Division, with the support of the other sectors of that Division, the Organic Unit for the Management of Green Spaces and also the team of Sapadores Florestais SF 08-111.
Different species were planted, most of them indigenous, such as Pinus pinea (stone pine), Laurus nobilis (Laurel), Ilex aquifolium (Holly), Arbutus unedo (Strawberry tree), Pinus pinea (Stone pine), Cupressus lusitanica (Cedro do Buçaco) and Acer pseudoplatanus (Priest).
In this activity, members of the GNR and the Viana do Castelo Territorial Command also joined in, who, to mark this day, carried out a “Walk through the Forest” and symbolically also planted trees.
In another location, namely in the Natural Monument of the Climbing Dunes of Faro de Anha (Monte Galeão), in the afternoon a plantation of approximately 50 native forest species characteristic of that area classified as the Pinus pinaster (Maritime pine), the Quercus robur (Carvalho alvarinho) and the Arbutus unedo (Strawberry tree).
The initiative was promoted by the Classified Areas Management Office, with the support of the Forestry Office, and included the participation of twenty employees from the company Painhas, which established a cooperation protocol with the Municipality for the Ecological Maintenance of this area.
In a statement, the municipality highlights that “this joint effort aims not only to preserve the unique biodiversity of this ecosystem, but also to promote environmental awareness and collective responsibility in the conservation of natural resources”.
Still part of the Celebration of the International Day of Forests, this week, at the Monserrate Secondary School, on the initiative of its Parents’ Association, involving students and teachers from different years, a planting of a garden area measuring around 200mtwo using native species.
To conclude the celebrations, an activity will take place on March 23rd, Saturday in Cabedelo, promoted by the company BorgWarner, with the Temporary Reception Center for Babies and Children at Risk – Crib and with the support of the Municipal Forestry Office.
