A spring weekend is approaching, with above average temperatures. The Maritime Police therefore reinforces the importance of people adopting safe behaviors when going to the beach, “avoiding unnecessarily exposing themselves to risk”.

Although the temperatures remind us of summer, it is important not to forget that the sea is still winter, that is, it is highly agitated, which causes, in particular, the existence of “areas of bottoms, steep slopes, eddies and pools”, the which makes bathing and other types of activities near the sea quite dangerous, the National Maritime Authority highlights in a statement.

Another factor that also affects safety at this time of year is the fact that most Portuguese beaches do not currently have any type of surveillance, which means that in emergency situations the response can be a little slow.

The Maritime Police urges that risky behavior not be adopted and advises for the safe use of beaches: constantly monitor children and do not allow them to stray and do not approach the water or walk on wet sand.

The authority also recommends not turning your back to the sea and always offering a safe distance from the waterline, avoiding being surprised by a wave.

“If you witness a dangerous situation in the water, do not enter and ask for help via 112”, AMN also informs.

According to the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere, the temperature could reach 30 degrees Celsius on Saturday and 27 degrees on Sunday, in the district of Leiria.

For today, forecasts point to a maximum of around 31 degrees Celsius.
