Around one and a half hundred children from five educational establishments in Pinhal Novo participated in the celebrations of World Forest Day, on March 21st, promoted by the Municipality of Palmela in the Val´Flores Botanical Garden, which is part of the “Pinhal Novo Verde”, in Pinhal Novo.

In addition to the students from EB José Eduardo Xavier, EB António Santos Jorge, EB Alberto Valente, EB 2/3 José Maria dos Santos and Centro Social e Paroquial de Pinhal Novo, who participated in the planting of the first two beds of the Horto Botânico de Val ´Flores (Pinhal Novo Verde), this celebration was also attended by councilor Fernanda Pésinho and representatives of the patron companies that have supported the plantations in that location – Visteon (plants), Florecha – Forest Solutions (wooden logs) and Magjacol (paints).

The initiative included the installation of signs identifying the project, the assembly and placement of 3 nest boxes, the painting of guardians supporting the trees planted on site and a moment of conviviality between the participants, with a picnic.

Also as part of the celebrations of World Forest Day, the Municipality promoted a Sports Walk, on March 17th, with the dissemination of native flora species existing in the Arrábida Natural Park.

The Val´Flores Botanical Garden (Pinhal Novo Verde) currently has two beds (out of a total of 39) with around 500 native plants well adapted to our climate, 90 of which are aromatic and/or have edible parts.

This action is part of the application presented by the Municipality of Palmela to the Compete 2020 Operational Program, relating to Support for Climate Transition – Interventions for the Resilience of Territories in the Face of Risk – (Re)afforestation of Green Spaces and Creation of Shadow Islands in Urban Environments and contributes to Sustainable Development Goals 13 (Climate Action) and 15 (Protect Life on Earth).
