According to a statement from the CNB, applications for the new artistic direction will be open until April 22 for a four-year term, from September 2, 2024 to August 31, 2028, which can be renewed twice for equal periods.

The competition jury will be chaired by the president of the board of directors of Opart, Conceição Amaral, and members of the jury are Rui Morais, member of the administration of Opart, Mark Deputter, administrator and artistic director of the Culturgest Foundation, Olga Roriz, choreographer and director from Companhia Olga Roriz, and Ted Brandsen, choreographer and artistic director of Ballet Nacionl Neerlandês.

Carlos Prado, current artistic director of CNB, succeeded Sofia Campos in 2021, who had held the position since 2018.

After taking office, Carlos Prado, in an interview with the Lusa agency, said that it was his intention to create a program of shows with the majority of dancers on stage, to present more live music, and he also hoped to be able to attract patronage to his “mother house “.

Carlos Prado told Lusa, at the time, that he accepted the invitation from the Ministry of Culture because he “knows the profile, difficulties and potential” of a national company that he has been following for four decades.

Created in 1977, the CNB is an organization based in Lisbon, and the only state dance company in Portugal, with a permanent body of artists that ensures seasons of shows and parallel training and debate actions.

“Founded by a government initiative with public service objectives, the company has two missions, which complement each other: one of a heritage nature, the preservation and dissemination of the global ballet repertoire, through the production of classical ballet shows; and the permanent updating of this art form, with the presentation of contemporary choreographies by national and international choreographers, some of which were designed for the CNB as part of its policy of encouraging creation”, indicates the statement about the competition.

Its history includes the first professional productions in Portugal of classic ballets in full version, such as “Swan Lake”, “Don Quixote”, “La Sylphide”, “Coppélia”, “Romeo and Juliet”, “The Bird of Fogo” or “The Rite of Spring”, as well as a work reinterpreting these canonical works.

Within the scope of the international competition, the person who holds the artistic direction will be assisted by someone, an assistant, to be appointed by the Opart board of directors.

The regulations for the international competition will be available from today on the company’s website, at www.cnb.pt.
