The Road Safety Campaign “2 Wheels: Hold on to Life” under the responsibility of the National Road Safety Authority (ANSR), the National Republican Guard (GNR) and the Public Security Police (PSP) has ended. In total, eight fatalities were recorded, two of which were in the Beja district.

The campaign took place between the 19th and 24th of March and aimed to alert drivers, namely those with two motor wheels, to drive safely, complying with the rules of the Highway Code and avoiding risky behavior, such as driving under influence of alcohol, excessive speed and incorrect use of safety devices.

During Security Forces operations within the scope of this campaign, 3.4 million vehicles were monitored using radar speed control.

In this campaign, a total of 2,034 accidents were recorded, resulting in eight fatalities, 35 serious injuries and 573 minor injuries.

The eight fatal victims, all male, were aged between 23 and 67 years.

In addition to Beja, accidents with fatalities occurred in the districts of Braga, Porto, Leiria, Santarém and Lisbon.

Accidents with fatalities in the district of Beja occurred in Vila Nova de São Bento, in a straight line crash of a moped which resulted in the death of the 67-year-old driver and, in Gasparões, on EM 526, a collision by a light vehicle caused the death of a 43-year-old pedestrian.

This was the third of 12 awareness and inspection campaigns planned within the scope of the 2024 National Inspection Plan. Nine more campaigns will be carried out by the end of the year, one per month, with awareness and inspection actions.
