A parish in Póvoa de Varzim is celebrating today. This March 26th, Argivai Parish Day will once again be celebrated. Being an ancient land blessed with great cultural and historical richness, the council decided to mark the birthplace of poetry in Portugal. According to Carolina Michaelis de Vasconcelos, it is thought that the ‘Cantiga da Ribeirinha’, the oldest Galician-Portuguese poetry, is from 1189 (or 1198) and written by Paio Soares de Taveirós, being dedicated to Maria Pais Ribeiro, who lived in the place of Quintela, in Argivai. Hence the decision to inaugurate a monument with the first poem in the Portuguese language that will be immortalized on Rua da Quintela.

The celebrations of the 1071st anniversary of the first written reference to ‘Vila Argevadi’ have yet another highlight, starting at 9pm, at the Church of São Miguel. First with the awarding of the Argivai Medal of Merit to three Argivai personalities who contributed to raising the name of the Parish: priests Marcelino Ferreira, Paulo Terroso and Rúben João. Then the “Argivai Terra Mãe” gathering begins with interventions from the trio of priests.
