About the Circular Line, about the expansion of the red line to Alcântara and, also, about the Odivelas-Loures light surface metro.

There’s always something happening. It’s like that in Lisbon Metro since 1948. A company that follows the city’s growth, wherever Lisbon goes.

The Lisbon Metro continues to expand, in order to keep up with the evolution of the city of Lisbon. It promotes accessibility and connectivity in public transport, promotes the reduction of travel times, decarbonisation and sustainable mobility.

The Lisbon Metro quickly expanded in the center of the Portuguese capital and reached other neighboring municipalities, in a logic of supporting the integrated planning of urban and suburban transport, providing interfaces that combine and integrate various modes of transport.

Lisbon Metro Circular Line

Soon, more specifically in 2025, the Lisbon Metro will have the circular line operating, which will connect the Rato station to Cais do Sodré and which will have two new stations, Estrela and Santos.

This new extension will have an additional 2 km of network and will unite the yellow and green lines between Cais do Suderei and Campo Grande, in a new circular ring in the center of Lisbon.

Improvement of accessibility and connectivity, reinforcement of public transport and reduction of individual transport, reduction of travel times, greater balance in the occupancy rate of the Lisbon metro, environmental advantages and improvement of the competitiveness of the Lisbon metropolitan area are the main benefits of this expansion project.

The Circular Line has an investment of 331.4 million euros, co-financed with 137.2 million euros by the Environmental Fund and 103 million euros by the Cohesion Fund, through Posseur.

Expansion of the red line to Alcântara

In 2026, through the extension of the Red Line from São Sebastião to Alcântara, the Lisbon Metropolitan will gain four new stations. In a length of around 4 km, Lisbon will be able to use the Campolide/Amoreiras, Campo de Ourique, Infante Santo and Alcântara stations.

Campolide/Amoreiras Station

Its planned location is along Avenida Conselheiro Fernando de Sousa, close to its intersection with Avenida Engenheiro Duarte Pacheco. Built in the open using the cut and cover method, it will be installed approximately 18.5 meters from the surface.

Campo de Ourique Station

It will be located next to Jardim da Parada. In this plateau area, the depth of the road layout is around 35 meters and the construction solution will be in NATM. This station represents a major challenge from a construction point of view due to the tight urban network. This is a central area of Campo de Ourique, where the implementation of station accesses in Jardim da Parada will not have a significant impact on the harmony and landscaping of the garden.

Infante Santo Station

With a depth of 29.5 meters, it will be located between Avenida Infante Santo and Calçada das Necessidades. The steep slope of this Avenue determines a strong variation in depths between the ends of the station. Therefore, the constructive solution will also be in NATM. From Avenida Infanto Santo to Alcântara, a 380-meter viaduct will be built that will cross the Alcântara valley between Baluarte do Livramento and the future station.

Alcantara Station

It will be the terminal station. It will be located above ground on the current access road to the 25 de Abril Bridge and will establish the correspondence connection to the future sustainable western intermodal line.

The extension of the red line is foreseen in the Recovery and Resilience Plan 2021-2026 and involves a European investment of 304 million euros. Considering the analysis over 30 years, the benefits generated by the red line project amount to 1,047 million euros. This extension will help Portugal fulfill its carbon neutrality plan.

The company is talking about a 4.7% increase in customers across the entire network through the daily demand forecast for the four new stations, as well as an increase of 11 million passengers to the Lisbon Metro network in the first year of operation. This will have an effect on car circulation: 3,700 fewer individual vehicles circulating daily in the city and, also, 6,200 fewer tons of CO2 in the first year of operation.

Light rail Odivelas-Loures – Violet Line

Expected in Recovery and Resilience PlanO Lisbon Metro developed studies for the implementation of a light surface method that will connect Loures to Odivelas. This line will extend in a C-shaped corridor that will connect the two terms, Hospital Beatriz Ângelo and Infantado, both located in the municipality of Loures, to the Odivelas Station of the Metropolitano de Lisboa, located in the municipality of Odivelas, which will function as a fundamental interface for this new surface light rail.

With a total of 17 stations and 11.5 km in length, it will serve a population of around 174,000 inhabitants. Estimated journey times are 9 minutes and 30 seconds between Hospital Beatriz Ângelo and Odivelas Metro Station and 16 minutes and 30 seconds between the Infantado urbanization and this interface extension of the Lisbon Metro, at an average speed of 25 km per hour on a dedicated road.

It has a planned investment of 527.3 million euros, with 390 million euros coming from the PRR in the form of a loan and 137.3 million euros from the State budget. With a scheduled entry and operation date in 2026, this new light rail line will regenerate urban areas, ensure greater social cohesion and provide a significant increase in quality of life. Given the urography and topography of the land, it was concluded that this was the most economically viable solution and the best urban solution inviting the use of public transport.
