Portugal is out of the 20th edition of the European Under-19 Football Championship. The young Portuguese lost at Municipal de Coimbra to Denmark 2-0 and saw the Nordics take the place in Group 4 of the Elite Tournament.

The young under-19s from Portugal entered the field playing with two results as, after triumphs in the previous two games, they only needed a draw to guarantee a place in the final phase of the competition, thanks to having a better goal difference than Denmark. The National Team had beaten Serbia 4-1 and Greece 2-1) in the previous rounds of the tournament.

But José Lima’s men were overwhelmed by the Nordics, better in every aspect of the game. The result was not more significant because goalkeeper Diogo Fernandes didn’t want it to be.

After a goalless first half, the young Nordics made it 1-0 in the 61st minute, thanks to Jorgensen’s strong left-footed shot inside the box.

The 2-0 was made by Emil Hoejlund in the 70th minute, completing a beautiful offensive move from the left in the area.

Portugal only reacted when they found themselves trailing by two goals. Dário Essugo was scoring a great goal but goalkeeper Aske Andersen denied his intentions.

Norway qualified with nine points from three games, Portugal added six. Greece and Serbia, who drew 3-3, concluded the tournament with just one point, in third and fourth place, respectively.

Norway will be in the finals of an under-19 European Championship for the first time.

The Elite Round group winners join hosts Northern Ireland in the final tournament, which also serves as UEFA qualifiers for the 2025 Under-20 World Cup in Chile.

The final phase of the Under-19 European Championship will take place in Northern Ireland, from 15th to 28th July.
