Pombal hosts an initiative to raise awareness about autism. The pilot project, which applies inclusion strategies tested in the United Kingdom and Ireland, has a set of actions to promote the training of professionals from different areas – such as Education, Health, Commerce, Sport and Leisure – to adequately respond to the needs of people with autism. The program aims to create and adapt spaces and services to welcome autistic people through the “Autism-Friendly Council” seal, and promises the creation of a Sensory Guide and a website with a map of places with signs and corresponding useful sensory information. . It also aims to encourage literacy on mental health issues, with a particular focus on autism. The social impact of these measures will be assessed by Universidade Lusófona.

The project, which is promoted by the association PARA – Support and Resource Project for Autism – and will have as partners the National Rehabilitation Institute (INR) and the Municipality of Pombal, is aligned with the National Strategy for the Inclusion of People with Disabilities 2021 -2025 and also contributes to achieving some of the targets of the Sustainable Development Goals stipulated in the United Nations Agenda for 2030.
