Mealhada advances with applications to create affordable housing in the municipality

The Municipality of Mealhada presented three applications to the 1st Right Program – Support Program for Access to Housing of the Recovery and Resilience Plan (PRR), to build and rehabilitate housing in Póvoa de S. Romão (Mealhada), in Pedrulha, parish of Casal Comba, and in Bairro do Canedo, in Pampilhosa. These three will be joined by an application for the rehabilitation of the Pampilhosa Railway District.

The Municipality of Mealhada submitted an application to the 1st Law program – Support Program for Access to Housing, of the Recovery and Resilience Plan (PRR), to build eight dwellings in Póvoa de S. Romão, type T3, spread over two blocks , each consisting of four single-family townhouses, surrounded by walks and gardens and also served as a leisure and social space. These houses are intended for housing families.

For Pedrulha, parish of Casal Comba, the construction of three dwellings, type T3, is planned, based on the rehabilitation of the existing building, a central building next to the Pedrulha Chapel. The third application presented concerns the Bairro Social do Canedo, in the parish of Pampilhosa, where an intervention will be carried out to restore the 24 dwellings in terms of correcting irregularities and energy efficiency.

These three will be joined by the recovery of the Pampilhosa Railway District, for which a protocol has already been signed with Infraestruturas de Portugal. The Railway District is a group of 12 uninhabited houses next to the Pampilhosa railway station, belonging to the public railway domain, which will be transferred to the Municipality for a period of 25 years.

The Local Housing Strategy, approved in August 2022, was defined for the 2022 – 2026 time horizon, identifying the priority actions to be developed in the Municipality of Mealhada: the rehabilitation of degraded or deteriorating urban fabrics, promoting the improvement of housing conditions; the mobilization of owners of vacant and vacant properties to negotiate rehabilitation and affordable rental practices; the rehabilitation of homes that can be restored by families in need of housing who own them and by landlords who are available to rehabilitate the homes; the acquisition of dwellings for social housing and/or emergency housing to relocate or respond to emergency situations and families at risk; the qualification of especially vulnerable urban areas and the promotion and availability of homes for rent at controlled costs.

“The objectives are to make the housing market accessible, attract and retain people and create decent housing for all households”, explains António Jorge Franco, president of Mealhada Chamber.

The Local Housing Strategy points to an investment of 68 million euros, including public and private investments.
