Portuguese League Against Cancer promotes “Advanced Training in Psycho-Oncology” for psychologists

The Regional Nucleus of the Portuguese League Against Cancer Center (NRC.LPCC) will hold the Advanced Training Course in Psycho-Oncology, taking place between September 2024 and March 2025. Aimed at psychologists and junior psychologists, this course, held in B-learning format, it aims to improve basic knowledge in the area of ​​oncology and develop advanced psychological skills for assessment, formulation and intervention with cancer patients and their families.

The diagnosis and treatment of cancer are processes that often cause great emotional suffering for patients, their families and even the health professionals involved. This context can result in psychopathological symptoms such as depression and anxiety, making the development of skills in Psycho-Oncology crucial for a more effective response to the psychosocial needs of people affected by this disease.

Therefore, the NRC.LPCC, in collaboration with a panel of specialized trainers, organizes this course with the aim of training healthcare professionals to deal with the specific challenges of Psycho-Oncology. Topics such as “Basic Notions of Oncology”, “Health and Cancer Literacy”, “Introduction to Psycho-Oncology”, “Psychological Assessment and Intervention in Psycho-Oncology” and “Ethics in Oncology” will be covered throughout the program, which features also with the participation of recognized international trainers.

With institutional support from the Faculty of Psychology and Educational Sciences of the University of Coimbra, the course will be carried out on a B-learning basis, with a total workload of 150 hours, of which 110 will be synchronous and 40 asynchronous. Of the total synchronous hours, 67 will be in person and 43 will be held online. 30 candidates will be selected to participate in the course, upon meeting the necessary requirements.
