The Celorico de Basto City Council began rehabilitation work on the castle and interpretive center of Arnoia, which show signs of degradation, in an investment of 140 thousand euros, the municipality announced.

In the castle, which is a National Monument and is part of the Route of the Romanesque, the intervention involves the restoration of the access railings to the keep and the interior wooden structures, including the beams. Some metal profiles inside the building will also be improved.

The area surrounding the monument will also be redeveloped, particularly with the enhancement of existing pedestrian routes. The area will benefit from cleaning work, access will be improved and existing signage will be restored, with information panels and interpretive tables.

The intervention in the interpretive center will restore the floor and ceilings of the exhibition rooms, which are in a state of degradation, according to technical information, as well as the exterior walls of the building.

For the municipality, the works at the interpretive center aim to rehabilitate the space subject to dozens of years of use.

“These are spaces that must be dignified and preserved, they are a reflection of our history as a people, memories of a centuries-old existence that enhances and honors us”, he says.

The interpretive center is located in the medieval village of Basto, the former seat of the municipality, located at the foot of a small elevation where Arnoia Castle is located.
