NIn the 2024 National Variety Catalog (1st version), Portugal has more than 1,000 denominations.

In greater numbers, tomatoes stand out (235), with names such as Benfica, Buda, Centauro, Glitter, Nelson or Zapateco.

This is followed by corn (141, including conservation varieties) and sunflower (116).

Also noteworthy is watermelon (50), with names such as Esmeralda, Esmeraldita and Palmira, as well as melon (49), which includes Capoverde, Marvel, Manuel António and Marco António.

Then peppers (44), annual ryegrass (41), sorghum (36) and onions (30) appear.

With more than 10 denominations, there are also, for example, zucchini (18), lucerne (16), potato (12), perennial ryegrass (13), and chickpeas (12).

Below appear tall fescue (10), common vetch (nine), forage pea (eight), purple-headed vetch (eight), rice (seven), common wheat (seven), eggplant (seven), oats (six), faveta (six), Persian clover (six), underground clover (six), Portuguese cabbage (six), durum wheat (five), cabbage cabbage (five ), the chicharo (five), the white clover (five) and the musk pumpkin (five).

With between four and two denominations, the turnip (four), cucumber (four), clover (four), strigosa oat or black oat (three), hybrid fowl (three), coriander (three) are included in the catalogue. three), broccoli (three), pumpkin (three), savoy cabbage (two), pink clover (two), among others.

The document also includes a set of species with only one name, such as peas, spinach, broad beans, chickpeas, lentils, common onions, lettuce, watercress, turnip greens, sugar beet table or the white-leaved lupin.

The production, certification and marketing of the vast majority of seeds of regulated agricultural and horticultural species implies that they are registered in the catalogs of varieties of agricultural and horticultural species.

For inclusion in the national catalogue, the varieties in question are subjected to official tests of distinction, homogeneity and stability, as well as, in the case of agricultural species, tests of agronomic value and use.
