The European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) announced that it will issue its ruling in the case that pits six young Portuguese people, four from Leiria, against 32 countries, including Portugal, for doing nothing against climate change and violating the Paris Agreement.

According to official page created to follow the case, the ECtHR determined that the decision will be revealed on April 9, at 10:30 am (CET) – 8:30 am mainland Portugal -, in Strasbourg.

After the hottest summer recorded in Europe in recent centuries, the allegations of young Cláudia, Mariana and Martim, three brothers from Leiria, who joined Catarina, a friend also from the city, and also André and Sofia, residents of Lisbon, were heard by the judges in September 2023.

After witnessing devastating forest fires, which killed more than 100 people in 2017, and increasingly intense heat waves, young Portuguese launched, on September 3, 2020, an unprecedented action against several countries in the European Court of Human Rights.

The case received worldwide attention, with more than six thousand mentions in the press in 71 countries.

The case of the “young applicants” is simple: “time is quickly running out to safeguard the future. European governments have a legal duty to take much more radical and urgent measures to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.”
