The Santa Clara Market, in Graça, will host the Censura Fora de Cena Festival, with cinema sessions on the 24th, 25th, 27th and 28th of April. Attention: censorship will remain at the door, but the films that will be seen on the screen were all censored during the Estado Novo.

“The festival aims not only to remember the fight for freedom of expression, but also to provoke reflection on these themes in the current context”, reads the event’s website, in a note that also highlights the schedule of debates and round tables.

The doors will always open at 7:30 pm, with an introduction by special guests at 8:30 pm, before the screening of the evening’s film: A Clockwork Orangeby Stanley Kubrick (24 Apr); Wake upby Alfred Hitchcock (25 April); Lolita, by Stanley Kubrick (27 Apr); It is The Unlovedby Fernando Matos Silva (28 Apr).

The only national film on the poster was produced by the Centro Português de Cinema, a cooperative that brought together many of the young filmmakers from Novo Cinema. The work tells the story of João, a young man who decides to abandon his studies, shortly before joining the army, and finds a temporary job through his father, a zealous public servant. Banned by the fascist regime and its negative seized, the film could only be shown after the April 25th Revolution. The premiere took place on May 3, 1974, at the Satélite cinema, in Lisbon.

Tickets cost €9.90 per session and are on sale online. There will be food and drink on site, including popcorn. The initiative is from Instituto +Liberdade, which joins – in partnership with Black Cat Cinema – the celebrations of the 50th anniversary of the 25th of April.
