“Primeira Obra”, the first fiction film by director Rui Simões, premieres in Viseu on the eve of the Carnation Revolution. Ana Hatherly, Sérgio Tréfaut and Jean-Luc Godard are also highlighted in Cine Clube’s April program

The Cine Clube de Viseu will celebrate the 50th anniversary of the 25th of April with two special sessions during this month in the auditorium of the Portuguese Institute of Sports and Youth (IPDJ).

On the eve of the Carnation Revolution day, on April 24th, and in the opening week in cinemas, Cine Clube presents “Primeira Obra”, the first fiction film in the 50-year career of filmmaker Rui Simões, who will be present at the IPDJ. Rui Simões is considered a notable name in post-25 April cinema in Portugal.

In “Primeira Obra”, a young Portuguese descendant decides to do a PhD on the documentary “Bom Povo Português”, also directed by Rui Simões, opening the door to a parallel between the reality of the film and that of PREC, the moment of the documentary studied and the contemporary world.

On April 18th, the IPDJ will host a double session with the films “Revolucion” by Ana Hatherly and “Outro País” by Sérgio Tréfaut. While “Revolucion” documents the urban culture of the streets of Lisbon in the post-25th of April period, “Outro País” is a documentary by Sérgio Tréfaut that brings together exceptional historical archives.

Before the commemorative sessions of April 25th, Cine Clube de Viseu presents this Thursday (April 4th) “Four Daughters” by Kaouther Ben Hania, nominated for the Oscar for Best Documentary.

The film’s protagonist, Olfa, a Tunisian woman with four daughters, has oscillated between light and darkness since the day her two eldest daughters disappeared. To fill the absence, director Kaouther Ben Hania builds her story and that of her daughters, proposing a journey that questions the values of societies, addressing hope, rebellion, violence and brotherhood.

On the 11th, “O Contempt” by Jean-Luc Godard will be shown. In this film that tells “an emotionally tumultuous journey behind the scenes of cinema”, Camille and her husband, Paul, are involved in a plot of mistrust and misunderstandings during the filming of an adaptation of “The Odyssey”. When Paul is hired to write the script by American producer Jeremy, Camille’s confidence is shaken.

The Cine Clube de Viseu sessions are scheduled for 9 pm.
