Trade turnover grew 0.7% year-on-year in February, 1.3 percentage points (pp) more compared to the previous month, the National Statistics Institute (INE) indicated this Monday.

Sales in retail trade increased by 0.7% in February this year, against a rise of 0.2% in January, while in wholesale trade there was a fall of 0.3% in February, whereas in January the decline was -1.6%, says INE.

The statistics institute also states that wholesale sales (including agents), but excluding motor vehicles and motorcycles, went from a drop of 1.6% in January to a smaller contraction of minus 0.3% in the month under review.

Furthermore, it highlights that sales in the trade, maintenance and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles accelerated by 3.2 pp, for an increase of 4.2% in the month of February this year.

As for retail trade, excluding motor vehicles and motorcycles, it showed growth of 0.7%, 0.5 percentage points (pp) higher than the previous month, according to INE.

The food products and non-food products groups showed “movements in the same direction”, accelerating by 0.9 pp, for a year-on-year increase of 2.2% in the case of food products, while non-food products showed a drop of 0 .3% in February, 0.2 pp less negative than that observed in the previous month, continues.

Employment, remuneration and hours worked indexes showed year-on-year increases of 2.1%, 7.9% and 2% in February, respectively, against increases of 2.1%, 8.2% and 2.1% in the previous month , in the same order, also reads in the statement.
