Workers at Ascenza Agro (formerly Sapec), in Setúbal, will go on strike for 24 hours on the 4th, Thursday, and gather, at 8 am, near the entrance (Avenida do Rio Tejo, Herdade das Praias), to demand an increase in salaries, replacement of health insurance ceilings and maintenance of all jobs.

The fight, as SITE Sul states in a press release released yesterday, was decided by a large majority, in the workers’ plenary meetings held on March 25th.

The union blames the responsibility for the conflict on the Administration, because it refuses to negotiate the Claim Book, namely the salary update, but also for changing the health insurance ceilings, without having discussed the measure with the workers. The strike is also against the collective dismissals attempted and in defense of all jobs.

In a statement to workers, after the plenary sessions on March 25, the union explained that the administration alleges difficulties in maintaining the viability of the business, to justify the denial of annual salary increases, and to defend the need for restructuring, carrying out a process of collective redundancies. Furthermore, it makes a point of promoting a climate of fear and insecurity throughout all sections of the factory.

However, the company has invested in its manufacturing unit and continues to have considerable production levels, with positive impacts on profits. And, right after a collective dismissal, it admits new hires.

These facts raise many doubts regarding the veracity of the reasons that led to the collective dismissal, and reinforce the workers’ conviction that Ascenza Agro is capable of responding positively to their fair demands.
