Tesla is already one of the ten best-selling brands in Portugal

-

In the first quarter of 2024, Tesla was one of the ten best-selling brands in Portugal, with the leadership held by Peugeot. The progression of the North American brand is directly related to the increase in the penetration of electric vehicles in our country, which already represent 16% of registrations.

Tesla was the ninth best-selling car brand in Portugal in the first quarter of 2024, according to statistics from ACAP – Associação Automóvel de Portugal. In the first three months of this year, 2,888 electric vehicles from the brand founded by Elon Musk were registered, which registered a growth of 37.7% compared to the same period in 2023. The penetration rate now stands at 4.89%.

With this performance, Tesla was ahead of “historic” brands in the national market such as Volkswagen, Opel, Fiat, Seat, Volvo, Mitsubishi, Ford, Audi, Skoda, among others.

Tesla’s rise follows the trend of increasing penetration of electrified vehicles in the national market. According to ACAP, 51.5% of registrations in the first quarter of 2024 correspond to light passenger vehicles powered by alternative energy, followed by gasoline vehicles, with 40.3% and, finally, diesel vehicles, with just 8. two%.

Among vehicles powered by alternative energy, battery electric vehicles (BEV) have a slight advantage over “pure” hybrids (HEV), 16.0% versus 15.4%, while hybrids with an externally rechargeable battery (PHEV) represent 12% of enrollments.

Peugeot maintains lead

By brands, Peugeot was the market leader in Portugal in passenger cars and light commercial vehicles, having registered 6,854 and 1,255 units respectively.

In the immediate places come Renault and Dacia, which registered 4863 and 4494 units, respectively. In fourth place was a premium brand, Mercedes-Benz, with 4301 registered units and in the next place comes another Stellantis Group brand, Citroën, with 3874 units.

The sixth position in the sales table was occupied by another “premium” brand, BMW, which registered 2939 vehicles in the first quarter. In seventh and eighth place are two brands of Japanese origin, Toyota and Nissan, and separated by just three units, with 2939 units compared to 2936. Kia closes the list of the top ten best-selling brands in our country between January and March 2024 with 2295 units.
