The city of Viseu marks World Physical Activity Day this Saturday (April 6) with tournaments, championships, conferences and the presentation of this year’s edition of the Sports Games. Cycling, beach football, judo, squash and basketball are among the featured sports.

The program starts at 9:00 am, with the Forlife gym, at Palácio do Gelo, hosting the Absolute Regional Championship Viseu Squash Open – Level 2, a tournament promoted by the Brave Viriathvs Runners association and which is part of the National Squash Federation’s sports season.

At 9:30 am, the Viseu CED24 – Mini12 International Basketball Tournament starts, which runs until Sunday (7th) at the Pavilhão Cidade de Viseu and is organized by Gumirães Basket.

There will be seven teams in competition, five of which are Portuguese (Sporting, Sangalhos Desporto Clube, Benfica, FC Porto, and Olivais e Moscavide Basquetebol), one French (Colomiers Basket) and one Spanish (Club Deportivo Carbajosa).

At the same time (9:30 am), the conference “Cycling – From training to professional” begins at Escola Secundária Emídio Navarro, with the participation of several speakers.

Among them are José Azevedo, sports director of the Efapel Cycling team and former professional cyclist, Tiago Machado, training director of the same team, and also José Carlos Gomes and Gonçalo Santos, directors of Azuribike (Mangualde team). Also participating is Telmo Caramelo, commissioner of the Beira Alta Cycling Association.

At 3pm, the Quartz Museum will host the presentation of the new edition of the Viseu Sports Games, which will take place between April 27th and July 28th. The competition will feature competitions in 28 disciplines for children and young people between 5 and 15 years old.

Also at the Quartz Museum, the session “Sports Training for Children and Young People: Informed Parents… Responsible Clubs… Happy Athletes!” is taking place, led by professors Abel Figueiredo (Escola Superior de Educação de Viseu) and Jorge Arede (University of Trás-os-Montes and Alto Douro).

Outdoors, on the Fontelo beach football field, Casa do Benfica in Viseu promotes the International Beach Football Pre-Season Tournament from Friday to Sunday (5th to 7th).

Judo is also highlighted at the Fontelo Pavilion, which hosts the Under-23 Judo National Team Qualification Championship and the Open for blind and low vision athletes. On Sunday, the National Veterans & University Championship takes place.
