The specialty of Gynecology and Obstetrics will have changes in the national assessment format and, being an avant-garde specialty, the College of Specialty of the Order of Doctors upgraded to the area of simulation, as a way of validating the acquisition of acquired skills during training.

As the Gynecology and Obstetrics Service at ULSAM is an active service, with highly interested interns and dynamic specialists, which is committed to innovation, it decided this year to include in its annual evaluation of the Specialty-Specific Training Internship the carrying out of a practical test with scenarios simulation, in a similar way to what is planned to be carried out in the final evaluation of these interns from 2025 onwards, says ULSAM in a statement sent to newsrooms.

With the collaboration of the School of Medicine of the University of Minho, which kindly provided the simulation models, the Internal Doctors with specific training had the opportunity to train how to act in simulation scenarios.

ULSAM spoke with the Coordination of the Gynecology and Obstetrics Medical Internship, under the responsibility of Dr. Vera Trocado, who said that “It is intended, in the short term, to include these simulation exercises in the ongoing training of specific training interns, with the aim of offering them a solid structure for acting in a real scenario“.

Simulation sessions began, which everyone enjoyed, and in this year’s annual exams, during the month of March, the interns were already assessed with simulation scenarios.

The service intends for the simulation to become a reality, not only applicable to interns undergoing specific training in the Gynecology and Obstetrics Service, but also to Specialist Doctors, as more developed countries are promoting this type of procedure, as it has been concluded that in Nowadays, the use of simulation scenarios is essential for the development of clinical skills in rare and/or complex critical events“, said Paula Pinheiro.

The Service Director reminds us that in obstetrics, interdisciplinarity is constant, with teamwork being of the utmost importance, and serves to exemplify the need for obstetric emergencies, as these are rare, serious, and opportunities for real training are scarce, Therefore, practical training for healthcare professionals is essential, using simulators and resolving clinical scenarios.

He also confesses that the service would like to move forward with a new project, promoting this action at ULSAM, also inviting other professionals involved to participate, nursing, anesthetists, neonatologists, because for effective action in these situations, not only theoretical knowledge is necessary, such as technical and non-technical skills, communication and organization of teamwork.
