“Everyone Counts” distinguished with the António Torrado seal – Honorable Mention
The winners of the second edition of the Reading Paths Sealone of the most recent Portuguese awards in the area of literature for children and youth, from the Reading Observatory, created within the scope of the Caminhos de Leitura Children’s Literature Meeting.
The big winner of this year’s edition is the work EVERYONE COUNTSby Kristin Roskifte, who was awarded the seal António Torrado – Honorable Mentionwhich distinguishes the book that stands out most in all the award categories. EVERYONE COUNTS, published by Lilliput, translated by João Reis and tells us a story about people, people in the world, and their differences and similarities. A book with beautiful illustrations, by the writer herself, that talk about us, about how we need each other, and is also a stimulus for mathematical reasoning and literacy. A work that results in an informative, careful and humorous game-book, whose theme is aligned with the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
Divided into four categories, in addition to the António Torrado – Honorable Mention seal, the award also awards the Distinction seal, the Seleção seal and the Brasil seal, based on rigorous evaluation criteria, such as the quality of the text, illustration, project graphic of the works, the approach to innovative themes, the creativity and quality of the translation.
In the second year of implementation, the Reading Observatory received a total of 103 titles from 34 publishers and author editions, resulting in the award of 31 Reading Paths Stamps and three reading suggestions.

As reading suggestions, the Caminhos de Leitura Seal award jury recommends TREES KEEP SECRETS – WHEN EVERY TREE TELLS US A STORYby Lucas Riera (text) and Olivia Holden (illustration), translated by Ana Markl and edited by Lilliput; NANO: THE SPECTACULAR SCIENCE OF VERY (EVEN VERY) SMALL THINGS, by Jess Wade, with illustration by Melissa Castrillón, translated by Pronto a Editar Atelier and published by Lilliput; IF ONE DAY – COPYRIGHT EXPLAINED TO YOUNG PEOPLE by writer Maria Inês Almeida and illustrator Manel Cruz, designed by Ana Faria and edited by Porto Editora.
All titles were analyzed and discussed by the group of experts, with the decision to award the four categories of the Caminhos de Leitura Seal being subject to several phases of evaluation, through which the jury reached the final decision.
As part of the attribution of the Caminhos de Leitura Seal, the Brazil Seal will also be awarded, a prize that will be announced at the 21st edition of the Caminhos de Leitura Children’s Literature Meeting, which will take place in Pombal from the 13th to the 15th of June this year.

About the Reading Observatory
The Reading Observatory appears in partnership with the Interdisciplinary Reading Institute of PUC-Rio – iiLer/UNESCO Reading Chair PUC-Rio, DGLAB – General Directorate of Books, Archives and Libraries, RBE – School Libraries Network and the Research Center for Child Studies – University of Minho, and is made up of a group of ten specialists in literature for children and youth (António Jorge Serafim, Bru Junça, Dora Batalim Sottomayor, Iêda Alcântara, Maria José Vitorino, Paula Cusati , Rita Pimenta, Rui Marques Veloso, Sara Reis da Silva and Margarida Costa) who analyzes and selects the national edition and the official Portuguese language (except Brazil), with a view to attributing the Caminhos de Leitura Seal, coordinated by Benita Prieto.
Disseminating and promoting literature for children and youth, writers, illustrators and editors, providing the exchange of editorial knowledge and projecting authors in CPLP territories, are the objectives of the Reading Observatory, which is generally coordinated by the Municipality of Pombal, through the Culture Unit and Educational Projects Unit – Municipal Library.
