Sexual assaults on a GNR soldier in Almeirim are shocking neighbors

A soldier from the National Republican Guard (GNR), assigned to the Santarém Command, was allegedly sexually assaulted on the night of Monday, April 22, in Almeirim, confirmed to NS, an official GNR source, highlighting however that the attack took place outside of service but “in order to protect the custody of this entire situation, we will not reveal any further details about this situation”.

According to the NS, along with witnesses at the scene of the alleged assault, early in the morning neighbors heard a woman coming down the building’s staircase asking for help, stating that she had been the target of sexual assault. Alerted by the woman’s screams, neighbors ended up calling the authorities.

Source from the Lezíria do Tejo Sub-Regional Command of Civil Protection confirmed to NS that 7 members of the Almeirim Volunteer Firefighters were on site supported by two vehicles and three patrols from the GNR of Almeirim. Witnesses at the scene also identified high-ranking officials from the district GNR, such as the Commander of the Santarém Territorial Command, Colonel Duarte da Graça, among others.

The GNR Criminal Investigation Unit was also at the scene collecting evidence.

According to Civil Protection, the victim was transported to the Santarém District Hospital for observation, where yesterday he underwent several tests, as well as receiving psychological support.
NS knows that no complaint has yet been filed. Since the crime of sexual assault is, in legal terms, semi-public, it needs to be reported by the victim for the investigation to progress to the jurisdiction of the Judiciary Police, which is responsible for investigating this type of crime.
