50 years. We celebrate tomorrow, April 25th, precisely half a century of the Carnation Revolution, which is considered one of the most emblematic and important moments in the country’s history. On that day, the April captains removed from power the dictatorial system in which Portugal was dived four decades ago and since then everything has changed. Freedom became the watchword and Portugal was never the same.

That is why, every year, municipalities organize a series of activities with the main objective of remembering, among older generations, and explaining, especially to younger generations, the importance of that historical landmark. This year, and not unlike the rule, there are several moments prepared for this purpose.

And we start precisely with Alcobaça, where the municipality has prepared (and has been promoting since last Friday) a packed program.

April 25th (tomorrow) will, naturally, be the highlight. Among the various moments scheduled, the highlight is the laying of a wreath at the monument “25 anos de Abril”, in front of the Paços do Concelho, a moment that will precede the official ceremonies, at the monument to Humberto Delgado, in the Cabeço area, remembering the marshal’s family picnic tradition.

The ceremony will follow with the laying of a wreath in Largo do Marechal Humberto Delgado, in a symbolic gesture that will be attended by the grandchildren, Rita and Frederico Rosa. There will also be, weather conditions permitting, an overflight of planes from the Aeroclube de Leiria in that space.

The official lunch will be at the “A Fábrica” building, headquarters of the Folkloric and Ethnographic Rancho Popoilas do Campo da Cela Velha, and, at 3 pm, there will be another highlight: the inauguration of the Museum of Talking Machines, a long-awaited work . “This new municipal museum portrays the history of sound technology, telecommunications and radio broadcasting. The Municipality of Alcobaça makes public and accessible to everyone a fabulous collection that was born from the emeritus venture of the collector José Madeira Neves, to which was added a multifaceted collection that enriches not only the municipal museum network, but also the national museum panorama”, explains the municipality in a public note.

In the municipality of Nazaré, the 25th of April celebrations will take place over the next few weeks, with exhibitions, lectures, music and cinema, joining other initiatives that are already part of the municipality’s usual programming, such as the Concerts in Vila, Jazz do Valado or the “Esquininhas” event, in a version in which the population is invited to participate.

In Porto de Mós, the day will also be full. The flag of Portugal will be raised in the morning, at a time that will feature the Banda Recreativa Portomosense, the Artillery Regiment No. 4 and local fire brigades. This will be followed by a street rally and educational activities celebrating the 25th of April, at Porto de Mós Castle.
