The Municipality of Braga carried out, on Tuesday, a safety awareness campaign with around 40 users and technicians from the Day Center of the Parish of S. Lázaro.

Promoted in partnership with the Braga PSP and the Elderly Protection Commission, the initiative will be replicated with other entities that make up the Municipality’s Social Network, in order to publicize the Municipal Gerontological Plan.

“The concept of an elderly-friendly city, later materialized in a global network, brings the issue of aging into perspective in an innovative way, reversing the way older people are seen by society and their respective governments. The Municipality of Braga has a wide range of social and health resources, of which the social responses aimed at the older population and health care units stand out”, says the Municipality.

“With regard to social responses aimed at the older population, the Municipality has four types of responses: Social Center, Day Center, Residential Structure for the Elderly and Home Support Service and Senior University. Having identified priority areas of intervention that are associated with different specific objectives and that are operationalized in four strategic axes of intervention: Well-being & Quality of life, Participation, Security and Innovation & Training, it is urgent that we go to the field to take measures and good practices from any of the 4 strategic axes of intervention”, he adds.

In the municipality of Braga, 18.9% of the population is 65 or over. The Union of Parishes of São José de São Lázaro and São João do Souto has the highest percentage of people aged 65 or over (25.88%), followed by the parishes of Sequeira (24.70%) and Cabreiros and Passos S. Julião (23.78%).
