Late this Wednesday afternoon, the Prime Minister of Spain, Pedro Sánchez, canceled his agenda and said he will decide by Monday whether to continue in office, following a judicial investigation involving the woman. Although the weekend is now given to reflection, Sánchez says he continues to “believe in justice”.

“I need to stop and reflect. I urgently need to answer the question of whether it is worth it, despite the quagmire into which the right and the extreme right want to transform politics. Whether I should continue leading the Government or renounce this enormous honor”, wrote Pedro Sánchez, in a four-page text that he published on the X social network.

The news broke in the Spanish newspaper ABC this morning, and the neighboring country woke up to the investigation of Begoña Gómez, wife of Pedro Sánchez, who is being investigated by Spanish justice. The case arises following reports of alleged influence peddling and corruption and the alleged favoritism of a company in public contracts.

The case dates back to the time when the wife of Spain’s current leader was co-director of the Master’s in Fundraising at the Complutense University of Madrid, and according to the allegations – now under investigation by an investigative court – Gómez had signed a letter that benefited a company owned by Carlos Barrabés, at the time of a public tender. This competition he ended up winning.

The complaints originated from the civil servants union, linked to the radical right, Manos Limpias. The preliminary process was officially opened on April 16 and the investigation is confidential while witnesses are called.

In the four-page letter he published on the social network “This harassment strategy has been perpetuated for months.”

“It appears that the judge will call to testify those responsible for two digital media outlets that have published on the subject. In my opinion, there are two right-wing and extreme-right-oriented media. As is logical, Begoña will defend her honor and collaborate with the courts to clarify facts that are as scandalous as they are non-existent.”

It ends by asking: “Having reached this point, the question I legitimately ask is: is it all worth it?” And in her answer she leaves one unknown: “Honestly, I don’t know.”
