THE LOOKOUT | April 25th

-

April 25th is still a celebration despite the revolution celebrating half a century. Salgueiro Maia died in 1992 but it seems like yesterday. The statue that the city of Santarém offered him is a place of worship for many people who respect the military as a symbol of the free and democratic country that we inherited. There are no perfect democracies, but that should not be a reason to lose hope in men. Salgueiro Maia experienced one of the most unfair situations signed by politicians who now pay tribute to him. That didn’t mean he was sour, or cursed his life, or went on numerous interviews to complain about injustices. Salgueiro Maia is a hero who connects us to the earth; His example of selflessness also helps us not to forget that we take nothing from this world if we do not take the honor and dignity of having lived with a clear conscience. These photos are from the O MIRANTE archive. The first recalls a national demonstration on September 15, 2012 against austerity and the second is from 2017 and results from a visit to the monument by 4th year students at Centro Escolar do Sacapeito de Santarém.
