On the day marking 50 years of the 25th of April Revolution, Celeste Caeiro, who on the day of the revolution distributed carnations to the military, becoming a symbol of this historic date, was present at the official ceremonies marking the 50th anniversary of the Revolution. PCP councilors will take a proposal to the next executive meeting for her to receive the Medal of Merit from the City of Lisbon.

This Thursday, April 25th, marks the 50th anniversary of the Carnation Revolution. The carnation became associated with this historic event thanks to the action of Celeste Caeiro, a flower seller who, during the revolution, distributed carnations to the military, making this flower the symbol of the 25th of April. Today, 50 years after her action, Celeste was present at the ceremonies that took place this morning in downtown Lisbon.

The proposal of the communist councilors in the CML, which will be presented and discussed soon at a council meeting, asks for the Medal of Merit of the City of Lisbon to be awarded to him. Celeste Caeiro participated in the 50th anniversary celebration ceremonies on April 25th together with her daughter and granddaughter, where she was applauded by the people present. According to a note from communist mayors, Celeste Caeiro, better known as ‘Celeste dos Carnations’, is a “woman of strong convictions, humble and hardworking”, and also a “national figure and communist militant, from the city of Lisbon” .
