In a letter sent to Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, the President of the United States highlights the “courageous spirit” that drove the Carnation revolution.

The President of the USA sent a letter to Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, congratulating him – and the Portuguese people – on the “50th anniversary of Portugal’s return to democracy”. In the letter, Joe Biden highlights “the courageous spirit that fueled the Carnation Revolution and the triumph over totalitarianism”.

Stressing that this date “evidences the lasting commitment to freedom and democracy shared by our two countries” (and adding that he hopes these ties will strengthen even further in the future), Joe Biden considers that “the vital and lasting transatlantic ties between the our countries, including our bond as NATO allies, generates a foundation of shared values and mutual respect that has only strengthened over our 233 years of diplomatic relations.”

And he recalls that Portugal “was among the first countries to recognize the USA” after the American Revolution and that North American ancestors “toasted the Declaration of Independence with Madeira wine”.

The North American counterpart of the President of Portugal does not forget the Portuguese diaspora in the country. “Here, in the USA, the Portuguese diaspora played a fundamental role in shaping our cultural and economic context, music, cuisine and entrepreneurship. Portuguese-Americans have made significant contributions to our democracy in many areas, from serving as members of Congress to academia, healthcare and technology – creating jobs, driving innovation and contributing to the growth and vitality of our country.” .
