Carnation Revolution meant the end of the dictatorship, but also the beginning of the road to integration into the future European Union.

Portugal celebrated, this Thursday, 50 years since one of the most important dates in its entire history: the revolution of April 25, 1974which put an end to almost five decades of dictatorship and which became famous throughout the world as the Carnation Revolution.

The day marked a turning point not only for Portugal and paved the way for the country’s entry into European Unionthen European Economic Community, which would happen in 1986.

The date was also celebrated in Brussels. He saidPedro Marques, Portuguese socialist MEP: “It represented the end of the old regime and the arrival of democracy in my country, but it was also Portugal saying “hello” to Europe. Therefore, for me it is incredible to be here celebrating Democracy and fighting against fascism, as we have to do in Europe, on the day I have to leave this Parliament”.

The revolution, which took place almost without bloodshed, was led by a group of junior army officers, who went down in history as the April Captainswith the aim of not only establishing democracy in Portugal, but also putting an end to the long and bloody colonial wars against independence movements in Angola, Mozambique and Guinea-Bissau.
