According to INE, which publishes the data, the average duration of trips was 4.08 nights, compared to 4.18 nights in 2022

Trips made by residents abroad grew 21.5% in 2023, to 3.2 million, reaching a historic high in the year in which total resident trips reached 23.7 million (+4.6%), released the INE this Friday.

According to data from the National Statistics Institute (INE), on tourist demand from residents in Portugal, Spain (41.6%; +3.2 percentage points), France (10.1%, -0.7 points) and Italy (6.9%, +0.2 points) remained the main destination country for residents traveling abroad.

In 2023, domestic travel increased by 2.4% and free private accommodation increased in importance, remaining the main means of accommodation used (61.3%, +0.2 percentage points compared to 2022).

The statistical authority noted that the average trip duration was 4.08 nights, compared to 4.18 nights in 2022.

In the last quarter of last year, residents in Portugal made 5.1 million trips, which corresponded to a year-on-year growth of 2.9%, which compares with the increase of 0.7% in the previous quarter.

Travel within the country corresponded to 86.7% of trips (4.5 million), having increased by 1.5%.

Trips to abroad, in the fourth quarter, grew 12.9% (they had increased 30.3% in the previous quarter), totaling 683,600 trips, which corresponded to 13.3% of the total.
