The Prime Minister, Luís Montenegro, received this Friday in São Bento the President of the Republic of Angola, João Lourenço, highlighting at the end the “symbolism” of the presence in Portugal of the Angolan head of State, on the occasion of the 50th anniversary celebrations of the 25th of April.

In a statement after the meeting, Luís Montenegro highlighted the “extremely deep historical and cultural relationship that unites the Angolan and Portuguese people and which also unites the Government of Portugal and the Presidency of the Republic of Angola” – and which the Portuguese Prime Minister wants to deepen .

“I had the opportunity to give the President of Angola an overview of our intentions to maintain this path of close relations, in many areas, from Culture to Education, to economic relations, which we are also interested in deepening”, said Luís Montenegro, remembering that there are many Portuguese companies “operating in priority, strategic areas in Angola: in the agri-food sector, textiles, pharmaceuticals, tourism, in construction, in renewable energies, in technological areas”. “We are very interested in continuing to follow this common path”, said the Prime Minister. A path that involves promoting the activity of Portuguese companies in Angola, but also providing Angolan companies with identical opportunities in Portugal.

With a relationship of cooperation and friendship between the two countries that allows “to look at what we have done, but above all at what we are going to do”, Luís Montenegro also defended that Portugal and Angola should act not only on a bilateral level, but also on a multilateral level, namely “within the framework of Angola’s relationship with the European Union, the CPLP
[Comunidade dos Países de Língua Portuguesa]within the framework of the United Nations and within the framework of the G20, as we were both invited by Brazil to participate in the work of the G20” [grupo que reúne as maiores economias do mundo e é
presidido, este ano, pelo Brasil].

Angola supports Portugal for the UN Security Council

Cooperation between the two countries on a global level was also a point highlighted by the Angolan head of state who, remembering that Portugal is a candidate for the United Nations Security Council, expressed Angola’s support: “Obviously, Angola will support this application for 2027/28.”

Without failing to evoke a permanent obligation to do more, João Lourenço considered that “relations between the two countries are at their best” and announced that he invited the Portuguese Prime Minister to visit Angola soon.
