Two brothers, aged 49 and 50, will await trial in pre-trial detention after being detained in Oeiras, district of Lisbon, for continued domestic violence against their mother, an elderly woman with Alzheimer’s disease, the PSP announced this Friday.

The two men are suspected of physical attacks against the mother, “leaving marks all over her body”, revealed the Metropolitan Command of the PSP of Lisbon (Cometlis).

The elderly woman attended a day center and returned home at night, with her two children as her supposed caregivers.

“Despite the suspects having already been accused and interrogated for these facts, they continued with the attacks, causing more bruises on their mother, without her being able to understand the reason due to the disease she suffers from”, highlighted the PSP.

The police revealed that, given the continuation of the attacks, arrest warrants were requested for both of them.

After their arrest, the two suspects were brought before the judicial authority for their first interrogation, which decreed that they would await trial in preventive detention, the most serious measure of coercion.

According to the PSP, it was also “ensured that the victim remains in the day center full-time, so that he can be provided with all the care he needs”.
