“In recent weeks we have once again heard the unearthing of ghosts regarding the positions of the PCP, the CDU, regarding Portugal’s role in the world and in Europe. They came with the bogeymen again that the PCP and the CDU defend the exit from the European Union and defend Portugal’s exit from the Euro”, said João Oliveira in his speech at the end of the lunch commemorating the 50th anniversary of the 25th of April in Seixal, district of Setúbal.

Regarding leaving the European Union, according to the communist, the issue “is easily resolved because it is an absolute falsehood” since “no proposal has been made for Portugal to leave the European Union”.

As for the Euro, João Oliveira argued that this is a discussion that must be carried out “until the end”, considering that Portugal “needs to be prepared to free itself from submission to the Euro”.

“And we understand that Portugal must be prepared for this not only because of its own decision, but because others may want to push us out of the Euro or because the Euro may end”, he said, recalling that in the past there was a “German Finance Minister who I understood that Portugal should leave the Euro”.

According to the communist, “if the country is not prepared for this it could truly be a catastrophe”, pointing to the stagnation of wages and economic growth or the debt and loss of productive capacity as “reasons that have to do with the Euro and with the rules that are imposed.”

“If the Euro does not serve the country, the country has to prepare to free itself from submission to the Euro. It is not a sudden act, it is a process that takes time, but it is a process that we have to start doing”, she defended.

João Oliveira had mentioned at the beginning of his speech that one of the differences worth highlighting in relation to other parties is that, “while others keep quiet about the problems the country has”, the CDU does not.

“We do not ignore the origin of the problems and we will continue to denounce right-wing politics and the impositions of the EU and the Euro as an important part of the problems we have to solve in the country,” he said.

To those who “refuse to accept this close connection” between national problems and European impositions, João Oliveira gives as an example the `troika´, pandemic, increase in interest rates.

Regarding the European elections on June 9, the CDU candidate considered that “a great electoral result” is within the coalition’s reach.

“Anyone who lacks hope, courage, energy, determination, keep your eyes on the celebrations of the 103 years of life of the PCP and the 50 years of the 25th of April”, he asked.
