At a lunch celebrating the 50th anniversary of the 25th of April, alongside Paulo Raimundo was João Oliveira, head of the list for the European elections, who argued that Portugal should begin the process to leave the Euro.

“Portugal does or does not need to be prepared to free itself from submission to the Euro. We believe so.” João Oliveira, head of the CDU list for the European elections, once again brings to the media agenda a position that has long been defended by the Portuguese Communist Party (PCP).

“When we look at the stagnation of wages, at the stagnation of our growth, at the debt of our country, when we look at the loss of productive capacity, we find reasons that have to do with the euro and rules imposed and in the name of Europe, if the Euro does not serve the country, the country has to prepare to free itself from submission to the Euro. It is a process that takes time, but we have to start doing it”.

To reinforce the line of argument, I would also say that the Euro could simply end or there could be someone in another country who wants to push Portugal out of the single currency.

The matter remained confined to the candidate, especially at the 50th anniversary lunch on April 25th. Paulo Raimundo just dropped the speech script
to pull weight in the fight against the dictatorship.
