The discharge organs of the Alqueva dam were recently tested, ensuring the safety and effectiveness of the system, at a time when the reservoir is just a few centimeters from the maximum level.

According to EDIA, the verification of the components and operation of the surface and mid-bottom spillway gates on the left bank was carried out successfully, proving that they are in perfect working condition.

Carried out at a time when the dam was almost at its maximum level, the operation was an opportunity to develop safety tests for the discharge organs. All water used during the test was retained in the Pedrógão reservoir, downstream of the dam, before being pumped back to Alqueva.

These tests, carried out annually as part of the inspection by APA, the National Dam Safety Authority, are essential to identify and correct possible problems that could compromise the system, ensuring full operability and safety of the structure and the surrounding populations.
