Get to know Lisbon through “My Neighborhood on Foot”

-

Over the next few months (May, June, July), the “O Meu Bairro a Pé” visit program will visit three parishes in Lisbon: Santa Clara, Lumiar and Marvila. Heritage, history, memory, inhabitants and their experiences guide the routes designed by those who know and inhabit these territories, are some of the objectives of Lisbon City Council, led by Carlos Moedas.

The Lisbon City Council will promote a program of guided tours in three parishes in the city: Lumiar and Santa Clara, to the north, and Marvila, to the east. The initiative starts on May 4th, in Santa Clara. “My Neighborhood on Foot” will cover, until the end of 2025, the streets, stories and memories of the parishes of Santa Clara, Lumiar and Marvila, with routes and visits designed and guided by those who know and live in these territories.

The journey begins in Santa Clara, the northernmost parish of the city where the landscape changes with each step. No longer rural, but not yet fully urbanized, in this part of Lisbon different ways of building, living and living coexist, which are revealed during these visits. The proposals include cultural walks, commented visits, staged routes and memory itineraries.

With very distinct dynamics and characteristics, these three parishes have in common the fact that they are located on the city limits and are in the process of urban development. They also share a rich history, a diverse heritage and collective memories that are little known and publicized.

“My Neighborhood on Foot” aims to break new ground and show a city undergoing transformation with the participation of those who live or work in these areas. The program starts on May 4th in the parish of Santa Clara, at 3pm, with the cultural walk “Between washerwomen, hatmakers and mulberry trees”, followed by an inaugural picnic at Quinta Alegre.

Throughout the month of May, and also in Santa Clara, there will be guided visits to the Church of São Bartolomeu da Charneca and Quinta Alegre and a staged route in the Galinheiras neighborhood, with music by Joseph Miller, a dance exhibition at the Coreto do Largo and a traditional African food tasting session.

Participation in visits is free, subject to booking (218 170 593 / [email protected]). Meu Bairro a Pé is a program created and developed within the scope of the PRR Local Integrated Operation (OIL/PRR).
