Canadian musician James LaBrie, lead singer of the Progressive Metal band Dream Theater, gave an interview to the Songfacts website in January 2019. During the chat, James told the story of “Anna Lee”, a song from “Falling Into Infinity “, Dream Theater’s fourth studio album.

According to LaBrie, the song in question talks about two very complicated topics, which unfortunately are far from being resolved and appear frequently in newspapers and other information vehicles.

“‘Anna Lee’ is about sexual abuse, an incestuous thing that I read about, so I wanted to write about this girl,” said LaBrie, who went into more detail about the story that inspired one of Dream Theater’s most touching songs.

“The name in the article wasn’t Anna, her name was Natalie. But the article talked about sex trafficking in third world countries and all that stuff. The article was loosely inspired by this: Sex trafficking in the South Pacific Rim, where a lot This happens, and in the Middle East. I wanted to write about this, so ‘Anna Lee’ is about sexual abuse – how women are completely mistreated. And there are also nuances of incest,” added the singer-songwriter.
