Viana do Castelo: Municipality will launch a new public tender for the construction of the market | Newspaper C

According to the socialist mayor, at this meeting it was decided that the responsibility for building the new equipment lies with the City Council and that the State will help find financing for the work and support the investment depending on the proportion that each person held in the society’s capital.

Luís Nobre added that the repetition of the public tender for the construction of the new municipal market results from the need for technical adjustments to the equipment design, which is still awaiting opinions from external entities.

“We will repeat the procedure so that everything is immaculate”, stressed the mayor.

In July 2023, the Viana do Castelo City Council approved the opening of a public tender for the construction of the new market for around 11.5 million euros.

Given the intention to open a new procedure, the annulment of that one will have to be decided at a council meeting.

In the explanation given to councilor Eduardo Teixeira, Luís Nobre noted a legal action filed by a former resident of the 13-story building, deconstructed in May 2022.

At the end of the council meeting, questioned by journalists, the mayor explained that the former resident “intends to revert something that doesn’t exist, his apartment”.

“It’s always questionable, but we have to respect it. We are citizens and each of us can do whatever we want. Now to take action to reverse something that doesn’t exist, an apartment, I have doubts,” she maintained.

Questioned by the independent councilor about the amount of VianaPolis’ debt, estimated at 16 million euros, that the municipality will assume, Luís Nobre repeated that it will be in the same proportion as the company that invested more than 110 million euros in requalification and construction of new equipment in the city.

“The State assumes 60% and the Chamber 40% [cerca de cinco milhões de euros]. (…) It is clear that with the closure of the company there is a sharing of assets and costs. For example, bank loans. 60% were assumed by the State shareholder and 40% by the municipality. In the final settlement we have to assume our responsibility”, he highlighted.

Luís Nobre pointed out as examples of VianaPolis’ heritage that the areas redeveloped by the Polis program, such as the city’s ecological park, will come into the municipality’s possession.
