Former athlete Carlos Lopes, Olympic marathon champion in Los Angeles 1984, will receive the Sports Merit – High Prestige award at the 27th Sports Gala, the Portuguese Sports Confederation (CDP) announced today.

Carlos Lopes, 77 years old, will be honored with an award that distinguishes “entities and personalities (…) for their extraordinary contribution to national sport and Portugal”, in the year that marks 40 years since winning the medal gold at the 1984 Olympic Games in the United States.

“It is of the utmost justice to pay this tribute to a true living legend of Portuguese sport, to whom the country owes so much. A reference that inspired generations of Portuguese children and young people to take up sports and that opened the door to our national sporting elite”, observed the president of CDP, Daniel Monteiro.

The Portuguese Sports Gala, organized by CDP, will take place on Friday, at the Pavilhão Carlos Lopes, in Lisbon, and will also serve to reveal the winners of the 2023 Sportsmen of the Year awards, which will be decided through voting online.
