If you are thinking of buying a car soon, you should make sure that your new vehicle has the REV (Reversing Detection System) security system installed, which serves, in a simple way, to warn the driver when a vehicle, object or person approaches. And no, it’s not a “normal” reverse gear sensor, let’s get to the difference.

This reverse traffic detector is an improved version of the already known parking sensors (and which are part of ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance Systems), or Advanced Driving Assistance Systems, in the free translation) and which detect the proximity to an obstacle, both in front and behind, using sensors.

But REV goes further, detecting obstacles at 50 meters (it can reach a wider angle, working like a radar).

The system will have a camera at the back of the vehicle, which will allow it to see the area behind the car. The ultrasonic sensors located on the outside of the bumper will be used to detect closer objects, around 3 or 4 meters away, based on ultrasound.

This is just one of the safety equipment that will be mandatory from July 7th this year on new vehicles, which will serve to assist the driver and improve road safety.

In 2019, 20 new systems were introduced by the European Union (EU), but their mandatory adoption was divided into two different periods: on July 6, 2022, part of them was adopted and, from July this year, the other half will come into force.

The rules will apply to all road vehicles and light vehicles will also have to have systems to support lane keeping and automated braking, for example.

The new regulation on general vehicle safety defined by the EU will be implemented progressively until 2029, and all cars will have advanced driver alert systems.

According to the European Commission, it is expected that 25,000 lives can be saved and 140,000 serious injuries prevented by 2038.
