AM from Lisbon wants a work team to combat drug trafficking and consumption in schools

Another point of the recommendation is for the chamber to make efforts to ensure that the Government reinforces the frequency of policing in the city’s schools.

The Lisbon Municipal Assembly decided this Tuesday, following a proposal from Chega, to recommend to the council the creation of a working team, led by the Education department, to combat drug trafficking and consumption in schools.

When presenting the proposal, deputy Bruno Mascarenhas, from Chega, considered “the increase in drug trafficking and drug consumption in schools to be very worrying” and argued that Lisbon should be an example of development and security in the country, “placing schools in the front squad” in combating this problem.

One of the points of the recommendation is for the municipal executive, under the presidency of Carlos Moedas (PSD), to create a working team, led by the Education department of the Lisbon City Council (CML), in collaboration with the Ministry of Education, Police of Public Security (PSP), National Confederation of Parents’ Associations, Institute for Addictive Behaviors and Dependencies (ICAD) and school directors, “for training and awareness-raising actions regarding the dangers inherent to drug consumption and trafficking”.

This proposal was approved by a majority, with votes against from PEV, PCP, two independent deputies from Cidadãos Por Lisboa (CPL, elected by the PS/Livre coalition) and PAN, abstention from BE, Livre and PS, and votes in favor of PSD, IL, MPT, PPM, Aliança, CDS-PP and Chega.

Another point of the recommendation, made possible by the votes against from BE, Livre, CPL, PEV, PCP and PAN and the abstention of the PS, is for the chamber to make efforts for the Government to reinforce the frequency of policing in the city’s schools, in particular through the Safe School Program, considering the specific risks detected by the work team.

The assembly also approved Chega’s proposal for the municipal executive to promote a broad awareness-raising campaign through the means of information dissemination in the city, in order to “alert and publicize these new threats to the youth” of the municipality of Lisbon.

On a proposal from the Liberal Initiative (IL), municipal deputies recommended that the council draw up a list of pests likely to spread in the city, indicating their causes and the respective municipal control plan, and publish this list on the website ‘ of the municipality.

This recommendation to combat pests was approved with votes against by PAN, abstention by CDS-PP and Aliança and votes in favor by the remaining deputies.

On a proposal from the PEV, the assembly also suggested to the council that it recognize the historical and heritage value of the art of tiles, deepen measures to protect and enhance this heritage in the city, participate in the promotion of applications for the SOS Azulejo Awards, speed up the classification of tile panels in the municipal heritage inventory and study the possibility of creating Municipal Tile Day.

Municipal deputies also approved the chamber’s proposals to conclude inter-administrative cooperation contracts with the city’s 24 parishes, for a total value of 3.9 million euros, with the PCP voting against and the rest voting in favor.

In this regard, the PS deputy and president of the Benfica Parish Council, Ricardo Marques, expressed his displeasure with the “disproportionality” of values and the delay in transferring funds.
