The European Blue Flag Association announced today the beaches, marinas and ecotourism vessels awarded the Blue Flag, totaling 398, of which six are new beaches and five are re-entering. In 2024 there will be seven departures, three more than in the previous year.

92 blue flags were awarded to the Algarve, with emphasis on the re-entry of Batata beach, in the municipality of Lagos.

The Blue Flag Program is an education program for sustainable development, promoted in Portugal by the Blue Flag Association of Europe, the Portuguese section of the Foundation for Environmental Education.

This award aims to educate for sustainable development in coastal, river and lake beaches, recreational ports and marinas and recreational and ecotourism vessels that apply and meet a set of criteria related to information and environmental education, quality of bathing water, environmental management, safety and services, social responsibility and community involvement.
