«Valuing the social and humanist achievements of our democracy, without letting us lose them again», is the great challenge that people from different areas of activity left to the new generations today, in a gathering organized by students from Escola Secundária de Vila Verde, about the Revolution of the 25th of April.

Freedom, peace and security, democracy, justice, solidarity, equality and inclusion, development and social progress are ‘conquered values that we must always continue to protect and promote’, as highlighted by the president of Vila Verde City Council, Júlia Rodrigues Fernandes.

In the initiative integrated into the commemorative program of the 50th anniversary of the Revolution of the 25th of April, the Vila Verdeans Teresa Lago, Salvador Sousa and Nídio Silva also participated, who shared their experiences during the period of the dictatorship and on the day of the Revolution, highlighting the differences in terms of conditions of life, both within the family, in schools, at work or in their communities.

As a special guest of the group of “GIF J” students – organizers of the session –, former soldier Cândido Barbosa described the emotions he experienced in Lisbon at the head of a battalion of tanks, during the operations commanded by Salgueiro Maia, on Thursday. fair of April 25, 1974, and which consummated the end of the Estado Novo.

«It is important to keep history alive, so that we understand the importance of the Revolution and continue to ‘feed’ the achievements achieved and for which we always have to fight», warned Júlia Rodrigues Fernandes.

The mayor appealed that “it is not necessary to lose what we have today, to value the values achieved”. He exemplified what happens with water or electricity: «we only give them importance when nothing comes out of the tap or the electricity fails».

With the aim of promoting the transmission of knowledge and experiences of the Revolution between generations, the program commemorating the 50th anniversary of the 25th of April in Vila Verde challenged all schools in the municipality in a special way.

In the last action of April – in a program that will continue throughout the year –, the president of the Chamber drew an extremely positive assessment.

“It was a success. Thank you all. We honor April. We had major events, with strong mobilization of institutions and the population. We reached 25 initiatives during the month of April. And we will carry out 50 initiatives throughout the year that marks 50 years of the Revolution. Now the challenge is to continue April, always», pointed out Júlia Rodrigues Fernandes.
