The initiative, presented at today’s meeting of the Municipal Assembly, by the PS bench, was approved by a majority, with 50 votes in favor and 17 abstentions, the majority of whom were elected from the PSD.

The motion urges the Municipal Council of Guarda, led by the Pela Guarda movement, to make every effort to ensure that the PS proposal that was submitted to the Assembly of the Republic for the abolition of tolls on the ex-Scut (free roads for the user) and calls on all parties to unite in approving that bill.

The text, read by deputy Paulisa D’Assunção, argues that, at this moment, “the budgetary and contractual conditions regarding concessions are met to approve the total elimination of toll fees on these motorways”.

The motion considers that the elimination of toll fees is “a fair measure, possible at this time, and guarantees justified positive discrimination to promote equity and territorial cohesion”.

In the region there are no roads that could constitute a quality alternative and there is no public or private collective transport that could constitute a good alternative to individual transport, the motion maintains.

“Families and companies have the right to access essential goods and services and the highways here, in the Interior, are a condition for this access in safe and speedy conditions. Tolls are, therefore, a contextual cost that at the moment it is possible to eliminate”, states the text that will be sent to the Assembly of the Republic.

The elimination of tolls in the former Scut has been the subject of other motions presented by the PS in other municipal assemblies in the Guarda district, having already been unanimously approved, one in Almeida and another in Vila Nova de Foz Côa.
