Empty accommodation for teachers, AD Government removes responsibilities

The building in Lisbon that was practically ready to receive displaced teachers remains uninhabited, more than seven months later. The objective was to establish teachers in one of the most needy areas of the city, but, almost at the end of another academic year, the nine apartments remain unallocated.

O The building in question had been the first to be flagged by the previous Ministry of Education to be fully occupied by displaced teachers.. Movements in building number 10 on Rua Forno do Tijolo, in Lisbon, began in August 2023.

About seven months ago, the guardianship guaranteed that the building was practically ready to be inhabited. Applications were being analyzed and protocols were closed.

The current Ministry of Education states that the person who should allocate apartments is the Institute of Housing and Urban Rehabilitation (IHRU). Questioned by SIC, the organization claims that, to date, it has not received any information from the General Directorate of School Administration (DGAE) or the Government.

Due to high incomes, hundreds of teachers requested transfers to other areas of the country.

The ministry then led by João Costa intended to establish teachers in one of the most deprived areas of the capital. Now the new Ministry of Education, Science and Innovation responds that “the current Government has no responsibility for implementing this project”.

The future of this building therefore remains unknown. You nine apartments in question belong to the Ministry of Education’s Pension Fund. It is not known what the value of the investment was, nor what happened to the applications of teachers who wanted to stay here..
