In the corridors and courtyards of educational centers in Portugal, where youth identities are shaped and confronted, we can think of a powerful metaphor that resonates: the X-Men metaphor. These fictional characters, marked by their difference and ostracization by society, offer a possible prism for interpreting the dynamics of masculinity among young people.

In a country where traditional norms of masculinity still persist, these (and other) young men still face pressure to conform to rigid stereotypes of virility and strength. However, when exploring the metaphor of X-Menwe can find a possible path to challenge and deconstruct these expectations.

Just like the mutants in the saga, young people in educational centers often see themselves as different, whether due to their socioeconomic origin, place of belonging, sexual orientation, gender identity or other characteristics that place them outside the norm. This experience of otherness often puts them in conflict with dominant narratives of masculinity.

The charismatic leader of X-Men, Professor Xavier, represents an alternative form of masculinity: one that values empathy, intelligence and commitment to the common good. In contrast, the antagonist Magneto embodies a more traditional masculinity, based on brute strength and the quest for power. This dichotomy reflects the different paths that young people can follow when confronting social pressures to conform to certain models of masculinity.

However, the true essence of X-Men lies in the diversity of its members. Each mutant has unique powers and a unique life story. But they are all united by a common goal: to protect a world that often rejects them. Likewise, young people in educational centers can find strength in their diversity, recognizing that they do not need to fit into a single model of masculinity to be valued and respected.

The metaphor of X-Men It also offers an opportunity to explore issues of inclusion and acceptance. Just as mutants are often marginalized and discriminated against, many young people in educational centers face stigma and exclusion. By embracing diversity and promoting an environment of mutual respect, spaces can be created where all young people feel validated and encouraged to be themselves.

As we navigate an ever-changing world, it is crucial to rethink the narratives of masculinity that shape young people’s experiences. The metaphor of X-Men challenges us to question established norms and value a more inclusive and caring vision of masculinity. By doing so, we can contribute to a fairer and more equitable society for future generations. This question led us to investigate and develop a program about masculinities, empathy and non-violence. About Vidas em Suspenso and Entre Lugares, about powers and super-powers that will be presented to the public from May 6th, in Coimbra.
