On October 29, 2023, a 45-year-old American named Joshua Farinella caught a plane to the city of Amalapuram, near the east coast of India, to start his new job as manager of a shrimp processing plant. Farinella, with a shaved head and soft voice, impeccably trimmed beard and arms tattooed from top to bottom, was excited about the prospect of living abroad for the first time. It’s true that it would be a high-pressure job and that he would miss Christa, his wife, but he had managed to negotiate a salary of 300 thousand dollars a year (280 thousand euros), more than double what he earned in another seafood company in the USA . He jokingly said that he was the highest paid shrimp worker without owning his own company. He thought that if he could last two or three years, his life would be secure: he would be able to make improvements to his motorhome, pay off his car loan and put some money aside for his stepdaughter’s university.
